Proefschrift: Mens rea and defences in European criminal law

Mens rea encompasses the subjective elements of crimes, like intention, as well as the doctrines that govern its application. Defences, distinguished in justifications and excuses, refer to those situations where the defendant should not be held liable, even though he formally committed an offence. The central question of this research is what mens rea and defences should look like in a criminal law for the European Union.
