It's not that long ago that compliance was not even in the backseat, but was regarded as a speedbump at most. Compliance was considered a process that needed to be handled to execute business or new transactions. Clearly times have changed. Over the past decades compliance first made it into the trunk, subsequently into the backseat and now (in some cases) even into the passenger seat. In other words, the compliance officer's role developed from being a reactive 'police officer' to a proactive and even strategically important business partner.

In this article, first the authors will have a quick glance at what developments got us where we are right now. Next, they will identify various trends we observe regarding parts of regulatory pressure being transferred to the corporate clients of banks. Then the authors set out some important lessons that the banking sector learned 'the hard way', which can help compliance functions within light-regulated sectors. Finally, the authors will discuss what the role of banks could look like in this new era of compliance.
